2014 July Whitefish Point

Whitefish Point lighthouse is located just West of Sault Ste. Marie at the Northwestern tip of Whitefish Bay.  Here also is the Shipwreck Museum.  There have been over 6000 ships of all sizes sunk in all of the Great Lakes.
Below is a view from the top.  17 miles off of this coastline is where the Edmund Fitzgerald sunk in 1975.  29 were lost.  In 1995, with family members aboard, a diving exhibition retrieved the bell from "The Fitz" and replaced it with a bell engraved with all of the names of those who died.  The original bell is displayed in the museum here.

Below:  painting of the Edmund Fitzgerald during that stormy night.
The lighthouse keeper at his desk below the main tower.  This man was keeper for over 30 years.  The house was very nice for the keeper and his family.  They had to order 5 months of supplies before winter hit, when the ice formed and locked them in.

Not sure what this bird is, probably an oriole.  Below:  Tahquemenon Falls on the way to Munising.
